The NSW Government’s Trade Pathways for Experienced Workers Program has been a great opportunity to formally recognise those working in the Automotive industry – in particular their Automotive skills and experience via a Qualification.

Patrick obtained his Certificate III in AUR30620 Light Vehicle Mechanical course through My Trade Start via the Trades Pathway for Experienced Workers program. He shares his experience with the program and My Trade Start.

Case study: in depth account

My name is Patrick and I have been working in the capacity of an Automotive Mechanic for approximately 4.5 years. Initially I started in the role as a casual employee working as a tradesman’s assistant and quickly grew my interest in the industry and pursuing it as a career.

After talking to my employer about the possibility of undergoing a ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ (RPL) program and researching about the process I was put onto the Trades Pathways program and submitted an online initial application to ensure my eligibility for the program.

The Trades Pathways program for Experienced Workers seemed suitable for myself as I was provided a list of outcomes that I had to provide assurance of competency by providing my case manager with job cards and photos for each training outcome.

This process of gathering evidence through photos and job cards was smoothly integrated into my day-to-day operations in the automotive workshop and after obtaining references for my supervisor/co-workers and employer, all evidence for the training outcomes were submitted as proof of competency.

Throughout the process my employer and co-workers were extremely helpful offering to assist with the gathering of evidence in the form of photos and references. The qualification is incredibly meaningful to me and really qualifies and quantifies the work and learning that I have been doing over the past 4.5 years into something tangible to help me progress in my career as an automotive mechanic.

I would strongly recommend the Trades Pathways program to anyone with experience in a trade job who wants to achieve a formal qualification and who is unsure of what they may be eligible for or how to proceed. The staff at My Trade Start are extremely accommodating, especially of my position and what I wanted to gain from the Trades Pathways program, offering fantastic guidance and support on the process and communicating with me regularly as we progressed through the course.

Jay undertook a week of work experience which help him begin his 4 year apprenticeship

After finishing school in year 12, Jay was working as a Concrete Laborer. After a few months he decided to follow his passion of a career in the automotive industry.

Jay spoke to our recruiters at My Trade Start and decided to begin a two week Pre Apprenticeship course with My Trade Start. After these two weeks Jay undertook a week of work experience which help him gain and begin his 4 year apprenticeship.

Jacques got offered a full-time position with Pendars Automotive

This is 18 years old Jacques from Sylvania who recently finished year 12 in Port Hacking High School. Jacqs older brother previously graduated as a full-time mechanic after completing a 4 Year apprenticeship course with us. After completing the Pre Apprenticeship course held in Auburn, Jacq was placed for work experience with Pendars Automotive where we recently got offered a full-time position!

Harry’s been offered a position as a 1st year apprentice Panel Beater

Harry is 19 and lives in Hurlstone Park. A few weeks ago Harry approached My Trade Start expressing an interest in Panel Beating. We placed him in a Vehicle Body Repair Pre Apprenticeship course with My Trade Start. After completion harry began his work trial where he wowed co workers with how enthusiastic and interested he was about the trade.
Ralph, the business owner, was so impressed with Harry’s work he offered him a position as a 1st year apprentice Panel Beater.
Congratulations Harry! We are looking forward to supporting your through out the next 4 years of your apprenticeship.

Daniella got offered a full Apprenticeship with The Alto Group

Daniella has a great passion for cars thanks to her Dad who showed her how to work on cars since she was very young. Over the years Daniellas passion for Automotive has grown.
Recently, she has completed our Automotive Pre-Apprenticeship course with flying colours and got offered a full Apprenticeship with The Alto Group.
We would like to wish Danielle all the best in her career and I look forward to supporting her on that journey.

Miller experience in his dream work shop Harley Heaven parts Tempe

This is Miller. Miller is 18 lives in Tempe. Left school in 2019 and worked at MacDonalds. Miller commenced a Pre Apprenticeship course at My Trade Start in Auburn. Miller has always wanted to work with Harley Davidsons. With the help of the My Trade Start team, he was able to secure work experience in his dream work shop Harley Heaven parts Tempe.

Miller started his apprenticeship today 5 weeks from initial application with My Trade Start. Good luck with your apprenticeship. We are here to support you all way.
